This was a completely random choice for a hike for me. I honestly was feeling kind of lazy and wanted a easy hike for the day. This was the perfect choice for just that. For a 3.5 mile hike out and back it is completely flat until the last .5 mile. The view is definitely worth it, overlooking Osmore Pond. I actually ended up doing this hike twice this year. I did it solo early this spring and again a month or so later with my other half and his daughter.
The trail starts out in Groton state Forest at New Discovery Campground which I assume is for horse lovers given all the sites with horse corrals. We parked at the end of the road to the left as the gate was still closed and walked approximately .25 of a mile to the trailhead. The first time I hiked this trail I had to park even further up at the ranger station which probably added another .5 mile to my hike.
The trail is completely flat, but goes through a beautiful wooded area. It’s a extremely quite and peaceful trail and not a sound except the birds and your own feet hitting the earth beneath you. The trail can continue on to Osmore Pond or go straight up to Deer Mountain with a gorgeous view point. It’s very steep the last half mile but nothing unreasonable. This is definitely a dog and kid friendly trail. I would rate it as Easy.
