I made a promise earlier this year that we would hike Mount Washington before the start of the school year. I cut it very close and was almost unable to keep my promise. Weather and other life circumstances almost did not allow this to happen. I was determined to keep my promise and this day seemed like an ideal day to make the trip.
This mountain is the tallest of the 4,000 footers and is actually a staggering 6,288 feet! It is the tallest peak of New England and all of the Northeast. It is known for it's crazy winds, weather and lives it takes yearly. It is not a mountain to underestimate. This is why I was very particular about choosing the right day for weather.
We started our hike from the Cog Railway Parking lot as the trail head was just a few yards away. We took the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail which is the same trail we used to hike up Mount Monroe. This was my third time hiking up Mt. Washington, but the two times before I took Tukerman Ravine up and Lion Heads down. I decided on the Ammonoosuc because my son had already done this trail and i knew he could do it again. I wasn't sure Tuckerman would be a good idea for him.
It was a beautiful day for a hike and the weather was almost perfect. The only downside to hiking the weekend before school was the trails were extremely busy. I have never seen the trails this busy before, it was crazy!
Once crossing the river by the waterfall the trail gets very steep and seems to go on forever. I heard one hiker call it the stairway to heaven. This part of the trail definitely gets your heart pumping. Upon reaching the Lakes of the Clouds Hut we rested a while and took in the view before completing the last 1.4 miles up to the summit.
Hiking to the summit is pretty relentless and just seems to go on forever. It is all rock past the Lakes of the Clouds Hut, but at least the summit is in few. They view on the way up was pretty amazing, but unfortunately once we summited we were in the clouds and we could only see a few feet in front of us.
