Mount Pierce & Mizpah Hut Loop
Another 4,000 footer in the books. At first the trail head was a little difficult to find, but after careful examination of my All Trails Map I was able to locate it. After walking North up 302 a short distance from the train station I was able to find a small staircase leading to the trail on the right hand side of the road.
The trail going up to Pierce was the Crawford Path. It was a beautiful trail going up with a small but pretty waterfall on the way. It was pretty buggy and humid, but I made good time and as long as I kept moving the bugs didn’t bother too bad.
By the time I reached the Mizpah Hut it had started down pouring. This was one of the larger AMC huts I have visited, but offered all the same amenities. They had fresh baked goods, hot tea and coffee. It was warm and a great place to dry off and rest for a while.
It was still raining pretty hard when I left the hut, but i put my rain gear on and kept on moving.
The trail from the hut to the summit was significantly steeper with lots of blown down trees on either side. There was a bit of rock scrambling but nothing too crazy.
By the time I reached the summit there was nothing more than a Cairn marking my achievement, but I felt satisfied with my accomplishment non the less. I walked through the clouds and rain making my way back down to the Crawford Path and back to the bottom.
This summit would have had a stunning view of Mount Washington had I picked a clear day. Despite the weather another 4,000 footer is checked off my list! Woot Woot!
